All you should know about Mini Tummy Tuck surgery
What is Mini Tummy Tuck (Mini abdominoplasty)?
Mini Tummy tuck or Mini Abdominoplasty, is a Plastic surgical procedure performed to remove excess fat and skin in the lower abdomen, below the umbilicus, to restore a shapely silhouette or body shape and achieve a natural aesthetic appearance.
If you only need a small amount of skin or fat removed, you can have a mini tummy tuck.
A single incision is made in the pubic area, which will be placed as low as possible and can range from a few inches to the entire span of your abdomen. Through this incision, your surgeon will remove excess skin, tighten slack muscles and possibly use liposuction to further refine the area. The ideal candidate for a mini-tummy tuck has laxity and protrusion below the navel.
The procedure can replace an unattractive Cesarean section scar with a lower one that’s just slightly longer. However, since it addresses only a fairly narrow swath of skin on the lower abdomen, it can leave behind a lot of stretch marks.
Before Mini Tummy Tuck
Before Your Surgery
. Weight – Advised to lose weight as necessary before surgery.
. Improved safety and result when close to ideal body weight.
. Smoking – Essential to stop at least 3 weeks before surgery and until wound are fully healed or at least 2 weeks after.
. Drugs – Avoid aspirin/ibuprofen type analgesics for 3 weeks before and after your surgery.
Who’s a good candidate for mini tummy tuck surgery?
This procedure can be a good option for people who:
. Have a little sagging skin or a slight pooch in their lower abdomen
. Need only minimal muscle repair below their belly button.
. Don’t plan on future pregnancies (which would stretch out the area again)
. Have always been in fairly good shape but cannot achieve their aesthetic goals with diet and exercise.
In fact, if you would like to improve your body shape because of skin laxity and excess fat in your lower abdomen, which does not reduce with good diet and exercise, do not have any serious medical conditions and are not significantly overweight, then a Mini Abdominoplasty, tummy tuck is likely to be suitable for you.
If a roll of skin forms above your waist when you bend at the waist or you need significant muscle repair and tightening, you’re probably a better candidate for full tummy tuck surgery. Most women who’ve had at least two children will probably be better candidates for a full abdominoplasty.
Mini tummy tucks are usually performed on women, but some men have them as well.
What are the Advantages and Disadvantages on a mini tummy tuck?
Pros:
. A mini abdominoplasty can tighten and flatten the lower abdomen.
. It can replace a C-section scar with a lower, neater version that should become a thin, horizontal line.
. The surgery isn’t as aggressive as a full tummy tuck, so many patients return to work after one week (versus up to a month of downtime, with a full tummy tuck).
. It typically costs less than a full tummy tuck.
Cons:
. Because the procedure won’t address stretch marks, loose skin, or muscle separation above the belly button, results can be limited.
. The procedure can leave patients looking unbalanced, with a flat lower tummy and protruding upper tummy.
. The surgery still isn’t cheap, and insurance won’t cover it.
Risks and Side effects
What are the risks or potential side effects of a mini tummy tuck?
Common to all surgical procedures there are always risks associated with surgery. However, Mini Abdominoplasty surgery is a safe procedure when performed by a fully qualified and trained Plastic / Cosmetic Surgeon in Hospitals with a high standard of care.
The common risks are bleeding (less than 0.5%), infection (less than 0.5%) delayed skin healing, and seroma collection (fluid under the skin), swelling, bruising, allergic reactions to anesthesia and changes in skin sensation near the incision. Each of these risks may require revision surgery. Other risks that may occur are, poor scarring – hypertrophic or keloid, blood clots – DVT and PE (0.5%), asymmetry, numbness of the skin.
Other potential risks include:
. Wound – Occasionally, mild infection. Rarely, serious infection requiring antibiotics ( Risk less than 0.1 %).
. Rarely, haematoma (blood collection – risk less than 0.1%) that may require drainage.
. Sensation – Some diminished sensation is expected around the scar and lower abdomen. Return to normal may take up to 3 – 6 months.
. Asymmetry – Uncommon, any pre-operative asymmetry will be pointed out and the operation will aim to improve this.
. DVT – Rare – preventative measures are used during your surgery and following to reduce the risks as much as possible.
If you notice any other symptoms that seem unusual, reach out to your doctor for help with managing them.
During Mini Tummy Tuck
During the Procedure
How is a mini tummy tuck procedure performed?
The procedure takes two to three hours. Like most plastic surgery, it’s usually performed in an outpatient surgical center or office-based facility, under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. You’ll be able to go home a few hours after your procedure.
If you’re also having liposuction, the surgeon will do that first. Liposuction creates more skin, and it also puts a lot of numbing medicine into the body. If the abdomen is being liposuctioned, the incisions will be made in skin that’s going to be excised. If excess fat is being removed from other areas, the procedure is performed via tiny incisions for the tube (called a cannula).
Once the lipo is done, your surgeon will make a short incision across your lower belly, usually just above the pubic area. They’ll remove a usually football-shaped section of skin, and they may tighten or repair the underlying muscles. If you have a C-section scar, the incision will fall an inch below it, and two to three inches of skin above it will be removed.
You want about a total of 16 centimeters (six inches) between the belly button and the vagina when you’re done, otherwise you’ll pull the belly button down below the belt buckle—and that looks weird.
Some surgeons will also trim off some fat on the underside of the remaining skin, making it a thinner layer.
The incision is then closed with dissolvable stitches, surgical tape, or glue. Most surgeons won’t insert surgical drains.
Once you recover from the anesthesia, you’ll be sent home. It’s important to plan for someone to accompany you and to stay with you for the first night.
After Mini Tummy Tuck
After Your Surgery
. Posture – The abdominal skin will feel tight and you are usually unable to stand up straight for several days.
. Skin support – Firm cycling shorts or girdle type pants should be worn for 3 weeks post-operatively day and night, and then 3 weeks during the day. This helps to support the abdominal skin, and decrease post-operative swelling.
. Exercise – Avoid vigorous exercise, including lifting of heavy shopping bags etc., for 6 weeks. Moderate exercise such as walking or swimming is recommended 4 weeks post-surgery.
. Showering – Showering ONLY permitted when home and daily thereafter.
. Care of scars – Apply Micropore tape (1 inch) along the scar for 3 months to prevent stretching and accelerate scar softening. Vit. E creams may be used after this period.
. Pain – Moderate discomfort expected
. Bruising – Uncommon, may last for 2 -3 weeks. Avoid Aspirin/Ibuprofen.
Recovery
What should you expect during mini tummy tuck recovery?
Most people need just one week off work for recovery. Some discomfort is expected, but unless your abdominal muscles were repaired, the pain shouldn’t be too severe. You’ll probably need only low-level narcotics for a few days, to keep you comfortable.
Your surgeon will ask you to wear a compression garment for six to eight weeks after your procedure. The garment reduces swelling and bruising while helping loose skin retract. Compression also helps prevent fluid collection (seroma), a common complication.
Swelling can still be significant, hence the term “swell hell.” You’ll have peak swelling at five days, and it should recede every day after that. Your lymphatic drainage system has been disrupted by the incision, so the excess fluid—which normally would drain into the lymph nodes in your groin—has to travel, against gravity, to the lymph nodes in your armpits.
It isn’t uncommon not to be able to fit into your clothes for a couple of weeks after surgery due to the swelling, but it should resolve within a few weeks as the incision heals and the lymphatic channels are restored. Lymphatic massage during the first couple of weeks may help to accelerate the process.
It can take up to six weeks before you can resume your full activities. Most people shouldn’t try any strenuous activities, such as cardio exercise, until at least a month post-op. Each patient is different, however, so it’s important to follow your surgeon’s specific instructions, to help reduce complications and speed recovery time.

How long do mini tummy tuck results last?
Mini tuck results are intended to be permanent, assuming you don’t become pregnant or have any extreme weight changes. If you’re happy with your results, you can maintain them with a healthy diet and regular exercise.
What does a mini tummy tuck scar look like?
A mini tummy tuck scar shouldn’t be long, and it should be entirely hidden below the panty line (or bikini line).
The scar is frequently under six inches long, much smaller than a traditional tummy tuck scar, which typically runs from hip to hip (with possibly another around your belly button).
It can take six months or more for a scar to mature. It’s quite common for the scar’s edges to be a little bunched or elevated early on. Once the incision is completely healed (around the four-week mark), silicone sheets or a gel like Biocorneum can reduce visible scarring.
How soon after giving birth can you have mini tummy tuck?
Many surgeons recommend waiting for six months after birth, but there’s no scientific study showing that six months is better than three months. It probably depends on how traumatic the pregnancy was to your body.
A woman who had a six-pound baby without experiencing much expansion of skin and muscle could wait less time than a smaller woman who had a bigger baby or twins. If you’re a smaller person and your tummy got really big, you’d want to wait nine months to a year.
Mini Tummy Tuck Cost
How much does a mini tummy tuck cost?
The cost of mini tummy tuck will depend on the complexity of the surgery—for instance, if you also get liposuction or need diastasis recti repair—as well as the experience level and location of your surgeon. A board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in mini tummy tuck surgery will cost more, but you’ll be more likely to be happy with your results (and avoid expensive revision surgery).
On average, the cost of mini tummy tuck in Iran is $ 1100.
