How to prepare for rhinoplasty surgery?

Before scheduling a rhinoplasty, you should meet with your surgeon to discuss important factors that determine whether the surgery is likely to work well for you. This meeting generally includes the following:

Your medical history:

The most important question your plastic surgeon will ask about your motives for surgery and your goals. Your doctor will also ask questions about your medical history – including the history of nose obstruction, surgery, and any medications you take. If you have a bleeding disorder, such as hemophilia, you may not be a candidate for rhinoplasty.

Physical exam:

The doctor will perform a complete physical examination, including any laboratory tests, such as blood tests. He or she will also lose your skin and inside and outside the nose. Physical examination helps your doctor determine what changes need to be made and how your physical attributes – for example, your skin thickness or cartilage strength at the end of your nose – affect your results. Physical examination is also important to determine the effect of nose-nose surgery on your breathing.

Photography:

Someone from the doctor’s office may take pictures of your nose from different angles. The surgeon may use computer programs to simulate images to show you the kinds of possible results. Your doctor will use these images for previous, subsequent and referral evaluations during surgery and long-term reviews. More importantly, images allow for a specific discussion about the objectives of surgery.

Discuss your expectations:

You and your doctor should talk about your motives and expectations. You will be told what you can and cannot do for your nose and what your results might be. It is normal for people to feel self-conscious in discussing their appearance, but it is important to be open with your wounds about your wishes and goals in surgery.

Sometimes the surgeon may talk to you about surgery to increase your chin. This is because a small chin will create their nose bigger. Chin surgery is not required under these conditions, but it may better balance facial features. Once the procedure is determined, you will need to arrange someone to take you home if you have an outpatient procedure. In the first few days after anesthesia, you may have convulsions in memory, slow reaction time and reduce judgment. So arrange a meeting with a family member or a friend at night or two to help with personal care tasks while recovering from surgery.

Food and medicine

Avoid drugs containing aspirin or ibuprofen for 2 weeks prior to the procedure of nasal and nasal mobilization. These drugs may increase bleeding. Take only medicines that have been approved or prescribed by the surgeon. If you smoke, stop smoking. Smoking slows the healing process after surgery and makes you more susceptible to infection.

15 Tips before Rhinoplasty Surgery

What to eat before rhinoplasty?

Before surgery, care needs to be given to the individual seeking a better recovery period. The following are some of the points that must be observed before the nose operation. But be sure to consult your doctor for more detailed information.

  1. It is important to discontinue the use of any aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, and herbal supplements two weeks before and two weeks after your rhinoplasty surgery.
  2. Tobacco and nicotine can cause blood vessels to constrict and also impair blood circulation, so avoid using it at least 2 weeks before your nose surgery.
  3. Avoid eating and drinking 2 hours before surgery.
  4. Drink plenty of water the day before surgery.
  5. Shower the night before surgery. In addition to cleansing your body of any makeup, lotions and creams, it can also help you relax.
  6. If you have nail polish, wipe it off.
  7. Be sure to check out the ways to get to the clinic or hospital you are going to in order to avoid stress on the day of surgery.
  8. No jewelry should be with you on the day of the operation.
  9. Avoid eating and drinking on a separate practice day.
  10. Bring your medical exams and records on the day of surgery.
  11. Enlist the help of a relative or friend to help with your first two days and nights post-op. It’s great to have support, someone to fetch your beverages and soft foods, and a person to keep track of when you’ve taken your meds and when you’ll need more.
  12. We recommend using Arnica and Bromelain for two weeks before and after your procedure.
  13. Arrange transportation for after your surgery. You will not be able to drive yourself home after rhinoplasty.
  14. Do anything strenuous that needs to be done before surgery. You’ll want to avoid heavy lifting for at least three weeks post-op.
  15. Bring comfortable clothes to wear home. Front-buttoning tops are better than shirts that pull over your head.

10 Things to Consider Before Rhinoplasty

Your decision to undergo a nose job can be an exciting time and welcomed change. However, before scheduling your surgery there are ten aspects you should consider about your rhinoplasty.

  1. Take approximately ten days off from work. In our Houston practice, we have talked to many patients who expect to be up and back to work after three days of recovery. This is barely enough time for the body to register the full extent of surgery and you will likely feel worse on the third and fourth day than the first. By taking time to recover, you will avoid putting yourself through anything other than healing and give your body a chance to heal properly.
  2. Bruising and swelling is normal in the first week. Undergoing a rhinoplasty has bruising and swelling similar to a broken nose. The area around your eyes will blacken after three to five days and swelling will continue for up to a week. Plan your surgery around any special events because it will take at least a few weeks for the swelling and bruising to resolve completely.
  3. Your final result will be evident after approximately one year. It will not take you that long to improve, but for all of the swelling to resolve completely. Many patients are surprised that their noses continue to heal and may go through awkward stages of asymmetry until a year after surgery.
  4. Refrain from exercise for one month. An elevated heart rate leads to swelling, and that’s exactly what you want to avoid after any surgical procedure. A heart rate of over 100, common in any type of cardio, is sure to cause your nose to swell, even bruise and bleed.
  5. Prepare for the symptoms of a rhinoplasty. It may surprise you to learn that most rhinoplasty patients who come to our Houston practice are remarkably comfortable after surgery. In fact, severe pain is exceedingly rare. The chief symptoms that causes most patients discomfort are the stuffiness, swelling, and bruising inherent in every rhinoplasty procedure. Luckily, these are easily managed with the aid of over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
  6. Know what is normal. Before panicking that your rhinoplasty results are not as expected, spend time to understand what is normal after surgery. Congestion, minor bleeding, swelling, and sleepiness are all normal.
  7. You will come in for a follow-up appointment about one week after your rhinoplasty. At this appointment your nasal splint will be removed, and it is likely that you will experience some pain during this procedure.
  8. Healing occurs in stages. In the first week to ten days the acute swelling will diminish, after one or two months the residual swelling will be gone. The final stage of healing will take approximately one year for the final result to emerge.
  9. Spend time finding a surgeon you trust. Experience and bedside manner are the two most important traits in a plastic surgeon. These two characteristics will ensure that you are in good hands in the operating room and during your recovery.
  10. Revision surgery is not common. The rate for rhinoplasty revision is exceptionally low for experienced plastic surgeons. However, if necessary, you will need to wait approximately one year for the final result to become apparent before your second surgery.
