Labiaplasty stitches and scars
During the labiaplasty procedure, plastic surgeons frequently use dissolvable stitches in this location that are typically gone by 3-4 weeks. Two common things you might experience in the early recovery period are swelling and itching. In general, swelling after surgery peaks at 2-3 days then subsides gradually over the following weeks. Itching after labiaplasty is common in the first week while everything is healing. It is important to see your surgeon when itching persists, as it could be a sign of a yeast or bacterial infection, or the itching could be an allergic reaction to a medication. After one week the swelling, initial pain after surgery and itching should subside dramatically.

How long do stitches stay in after labiaplasty?
During the labiaplasty procedure, plastic surgeons frequently use dissolvable stitches in this location that are typically gone by 3-4 weeks. If absorbable stitches were used, they should have started disappearing. Some stitches will remain and you may be able to feel them. This is also quite normal. Itching at the incision sites is normal.
How painful is labiaplasty recovery?
The labiaplasty surgery will be performed with anesthesia, and you will feel little to no discomfort, but some mild post-op pain will most likely occur. It is surgery after all, and operating on a sensitive area like the labia will cause some discomfort. You will be given medication to help with your symptoms after your surgery, which you should take as instructed by your surgeon.
How long does it take for labiaplasty swelling to go down?
It is perfectly normal—and almost guaranteed—that you will have swelling and/or bruising for a few weeks after surgery. If you experience discomfort while urinating, you can ease the pain either by urinating in the shower or by running warm water over the affected area as you pee. Additionally, icing the affected area can help reduce swelling (don’t apply directly to the skin—use cloth coverings). One side is always more swollen than the other. In general, swelling after surgery peaks at 2-3 days then subsides gradually over the following weeks.

There are a host of reasons females have enlarged labia, including childbirth, aging, sexual activity and genetics. Females choose to have surgery for several reasons. First, there are several functional benefits when electing for a labiaplasty. Many females who suffer from an enlarged labia experience difficulty with exercise, hygiene, urinary tract infections, sexual activity and other physical activity.
Furthermore, with the increasing trend of wearing yoga pants, workout pants and swimming suits, an enlarged labium can make it difficult to wear such clothes. However, most female patients describe feeling extremely self-conscious when becoming romantically involved with their partners. These reasons and others are what females consider when choosing a labiaplasty.

How do I know if my labiaplasty is infected?
- Signs of infection, including fever and chills
- Redness, swelling, increasing pain, excessive bleeding, or any discharge from the incision site
Most clinics offer some type of antibiotic therapy to prevent infection. It may be topically applied, such as erythromycin, orally administered such as with first-generation cephalosporins, or a combination of topical and oral antibiotics. Topical antibiotics should be reapplied after each perineal or vulval wash. The application of soap to the vulva should be avoided during this period.
Antibiotics are usually prescribed for 5 days following the surgery after which the wound is usually epithelialized. However, some surgeons will advise application for 10 days. The occurrence of superficial infection during this time increases the risk of wound dehiscence, suture granulomas, and scarring.
In most cases the patients are advised to avoid soaks in bathtubs and swimming, and opt to have short showers instead. The vulva is to be patted clean and dry very gently and careful daily dressing with clean dressings along with warm water rinses are recommended. Rinsing should occur after each toilet visit. Dry clean dressings should be reapplied regularly for at least 5 days or until the wound becomes dry.
Sitz baths are also useful during this time to remove dead skin, relieve pain and reduce inflammation in the affected area.
To promote timely healing, minimize scarring, and prevent infection, patients are advised to avoid sexual intercourse for at least 6-8 weeks following the surgery.

Does labiaplasty affect sensitivity?
The absence of sensation loss from reducing large or redundant labia minora should not be misconstrued to mean that there is no risk to sensation or orgasmic function in labiaplasty procedures, a major worry on the minds of many women who are considering a labiaplasty is how it will affect sensation during sex after the procedure is performed and everything has healed.
It is important to understand what happens during a labiaplasty procedure – when a labiaplasty is performed, no nerves are removed or damaged; instead, it is only tissue that is removed, and tissue has no nerve endings. Because of this, you needn’t worry about a decrease in sexual sensation after a labiaplasty – in fact, you won’t notice much of an increase, either.
In short, the amount of sensation that you feel after a labiaplasty will remain the same as it was before the procedure.
What you can expect, however, is a rise in self-confidence after a labiaplasty procedure, which can, in turn, help you feel a lot better in the bedroom.

Why would someone get a labiaplasty?
After labiaplasty
The first day after surgery, expect your labia, both the inner and the outer, also known as the labia minora and labia majora, respectively, to be quite swollen. The skin over your clitoris may be bulging as well even though no cutting was done in this area.
Absolutely do not expect them to look “normal.” The tissue down there is quite compliant, meaning it can stretch significantly. It may look alarmingly swollen, but not to worry, this is normal after surgery.
On this first day, applying a cold compress to the area will help with pain relief and swelling. Avoid keeping the cold compress on the area longer than 15 minutes in a row to avoid skin damage.
Commonly, one week before your procedure, a physician will prescribe arnica and bromelain pills to help with bruising and swelling. Under the direction of your physician, you may be told to continue this for a few days after surgery to minimize bruising post-procedure.
Take your pain pills as directed by your surgeon. Some patients will suffice with taking only acetaminophen (Tylenol) while others may need something a bit stronger, such as a narcotic (Norco, Vicodin, etc.).
If your surgeon has injected Marcaine, a long-acting pain medication, into the area after surgery, you may now start to feel that it has worn off.3 Take your pain medication before this happens to get a head start on the pain. Some surgeons may prescribe a lidocaine ointment that you can apply to your incisions to help ease the pain.
Mild blood-tinged drainage is normal. Some surgeons will have you start applying antibiotic ointment to the area.
You may have some stinging with urination. Using a spray bottle filled with water to squirt on the incisions as you urinate will dilute the urine running over your incisions and take away the sting. Additionally, it gives the added benefit of cleaning the area after urination.
Friction from your underwear and even from just the movement of walking may cause moderate to severe discomfort or pain. It is for this reason you may want to take some time off from work.

- Day 2
The swelling may be worse than the previous day; it often gets a bit worse before it gets better. Do not be alarmed. Continue using the spray bottle with urination to give pain relief and to clean the area. Once you are more than 24 hours out from your surgery, your surgeon may allow you to take sitz baths.
Do not expect normal labial appearance. You will still have swelling. In fact, as you start to move about a bit more, you may notice fluctuations in the amount of swelling of your labia. Asymmetric swelling can be normal.
You will continue to take your pain medications and apply ointment to the incisions as directed by your surgeon. Pain and/or discomfort is still normal. Blood-tinged drainage on your underwear or a sanitary napkin is normal.
You may still not be wearing any tight clothing/underwear if you’re sensitive to the pressure. Continue icing if permitted by your surgeon and/or you feel you need that extra pain relief and help with swelling.
If in the first week you have unbearable pain, foul odor, pus, excessive drainage, fever, or any other concern, you should call your surgeon.
- Days 6 to 7
By day six and seven, the swelling should improve slightly but will still be nowhere near normal. The pain will likely still be present but should be lessened. Ointments and pain medication should be used as directed by your surgeon. You will likely be tapering your pain medications.
Continue cleaning the area after using the bathroom. Some itching around the stitches is normal. You will likely have a postoperative appointment around this time or in the next one to two days.
