Chin Correction Surgery in Iran

Genioplasty is the medical term for the cosmetic surgery and treatment of the chin. The shape of our chin has a deep impact on how our face looks and the overall contours of the face can be modified and enhanced with Genioplasty. Genioplasty or chin augmentation surgery can be done to correct the protruding chin, a malpositioned chin or a receding chin with the help of surgery. Genioplasty can refer to both enhancement surgery of the chin and chin reduction surgery. The chin enhancement surgery can be done with the help of chin implants. Genioplasty provides better proportions to the facial features.

Very often, Genioplasty is not performed in isolation. So, a Genioplasty treatment may be planned in addition to surgery of the jaw or the mandible which gives much better overall results than just a simple chin augmentation surgery. A Genioplasty or chin surgery is done to correct the profile of the person. The chin implant surgery may be done with the help artificial implants or the surgery may be done using the bones from the patient’s own body.

Am I a good candidate for Aesthetic Chin Surgery?

The success and safety of the procedure depends very much on your complete candidness during your consultation. There is customized solution for each patient as per their expectations. The doctor will discuss your concerns about your face, your expectations and explain probable outcomes of the procedure. If you are bothered by a small chin, weak jaw or lack of facial contour, plastic surgery with facial enhancement may benefit you. For the individual with a relatively short neck or unnatural bulge below the chin (sub-mental fat), chin enhancement can provide the illusion of a longer neck and reduction of sub-mental bulge, thereby improve one’s profile. If the structure of your face is disproportionate- such as the chin is recessed it can significantly affect your self-image. In particular, a “weak” chin on a Man may feminize the face and may even unjustifiably carry negative psychological overtones about his character. For the female, a weak chin may make a prominent nose appear even more so and looks like a bird’s face.

The procedure can also benefit those with asymmetries or congenital defects. Plastic surgery on facial bones or with facial implants is best performed on people whose head and skull have reached physical maturity, which generally occurs in late adolescence (after 17-18 years of age). Before taking any decision about your surgery, ask your surgeon if there are additional procedures that may enhance the effects of your face. Chin and cheek augmentation can be an adjunctive procedure and can often accompany a rhinoplasty or a nose job.

Before genioplasty

Preparing for Your Surgery
After your consultation and decisions about surgery, we will give you pre-operative information that explains everything you should do and know before your procedure. Your surgical team will instruct you on how to prepare. You should arrange for someone to drive you home after your surgery. You may also want to make arrangements for someone to help you for a day or two while you heal.

 What does the operation involve?

The operation is carried out from the inside of your mouth so that there are no visible scars on the skin of your face. A cut is made through the gum on the inside of the lower lip to gain access to the lower jaw bone and chin. The chin is then cut with a small saw to allow it to be broken in a controlled manner. It is then moved into its new position and held in place with small metal plates and screws. The gum inside the mouth is stitched back into place with dissolvable stitches that can take a fortnight or even longer to fall out.

Types of genioplasty

There are two main types of genioplasty: sliding genioplasty and chin implants.

Sliding genioplasty

In a sliding genioplasty, a surgeon uses a saw to cut the chin bone away from the rest of the jaw and move it to correct a chin deficiency. This is also called an osseous genioplasty.

This type of genioplasty is recommended for people with severe retrogenia, or people whose chin is too far back in relation to the rest of their face. It can also help with correcting chins that are pushed too far forward and are too long.

Chin implants

Chin implants can be used to reshape, enlarge, or push forward the appearance of the chin. This can be accomplished via surgery or injection.

Surgical chin augmentation involves implanting a plastic material into the chin and adhering it to the bone. Alloplastic implants (those made from synthetic materials) are the most common.

Nonsurgical chin augmentation involves using needles to inject fillers, such as body fat, to enhance the appearance of the chin.

genioplasty recovery

The genioplasty recovery period is NO long. You will be able to return to work seven to ten days after surgery. recovery takes between two or three weeks.

Complications following mentoplasty with alloplastic implants include infection, over- or undercorrection, asymmetry, numbness in the distribution of the mental nerve, marginal mandibular nerve weakness, and mandibular resorption. Infection is very rare, especially with a submental approach. It can occur in the immediate postoperative period as well as months to years later. Infection usually presents as increasing pain, tenderness, or swelling. Once the infection is identified, treatment includes a course of oral antibiotics. If infection is not resolving with antibiotics, the implant should be removed. In over 30 years of experience we have had to remove an implant secondary to infection on only a few occasions. If an implant is removed because of infection, we will generally wait a period of 6 months before reimplantation. This allows sufficient time for swelling to resolve and scar to form so that sizing for another implant will be accurate.

If the chin appears mildly over projected during the postoperative period, the patient should be reassured and observed over a period of at least 3 months to allow swelling to subside before deciding to downsize the implant. In the case of under correction, an extension wafer can be placed under the existing implant as described previously; alternatively, the implant can be replaced with a larger one.

Asymmetries following augmentation are most commonly from preexisting mandibular asymmetries, which if significant, would ideally have been reviewed with the patient preoperatively. Implant shifting can occur, and would most commonly be in the cephalad direction. Shifting is prevented by using the submental approach, which allows suture fixation of the implant to the mandibular periosteum.

risks for genioplasty include:

  • infection
  • allergic reaction to an implant
  • extrusion of implant
  • exposure of screws
  • nerve damage that causes mouth or lip numbness
