What is a dorsal hump?
Dorsal humps are cartilage and bone irregularities on the nose. These irregularities can cause a bump or “hump” in the outline of a person’s nose, instead of a straight slope from the bridge of the nose to the tip. Unlike a deviated septum, which is a medical condition that can make your nose look crooked, dorsal humps don’t typically affect breathing.
Is a dorsal hump a deformity?
When patients view their facial profile, the dorsal hump begins at the top part of their nose near the eyes, and ends before the nasal tip. The majority of patients with a dorsal hump desire a flatter, smoother nasal bridge. A ‘dorsal hump deformity’ refers to an undesirable bump involving the bridge, or dorsum. This is best appreciated on the lateral view of the nose and appears as a convexity over the bridge. In some cases, a dorsal hump deformity is barely noticeable on frontal view.
Who is the best candidate for dorsal hump removal surgery?
The best candidates are those with elastic skin that is not too thick to be able to shrink wrap accordingly around the newly diminished nose and those with high motivation and realistic expectations. Apart from nasal hump the most wanted aesthetic nose surgeries include procedures refining crooked, wide, big, small, or long nose. In most of these cases, open rhinoplasty is applied.

Dorsal hump removal options
Dorsal humps removal surgery
A bump or hump considered as a family trait is usually cartilage not a bone, which is then shaved down. If necessary the bone can be filled. In case of a depression in between your eyes, your surgeon will use a small graft of cartilage to increase the depression.
The goal of both approaches is to refine the profile of a patient. Providing the nasal septum is deviated, your surgeon will advise its straightening with reduction of some excess parts inside in order to achieve better breathing.
Once the nose is sculpted into desirable shape, nasal skin must be redraped. Incisions are later closed.
A dorsal hump can’t “grow back” after it’s removed.
Dorsal hump removal without surgery
Nonsurgical rhinoplasty, also called a liquid rhinoplasty, produces results that can last between 6 months to 2 years.
This procedure requires topical anesthesia and can be completed in about half an hour.
Using dermal fillers, your plastic surgeon fills in the areas of your nose around where your dorsal hump begins. This can result in a smoother silhouette down the bridge of your nose.
This procedure is significantly less expensive than a rhinoplasty, with fewer possible complications and little to no recovery time before you can resume your regular activities.
