The surgeon will open your child’s mouth to remove the tonsils and adenoids. Just as may happen after a visit to the dentist, your child’s jaw muscles may be tender afterward. The operation is usually carried out by an ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon and takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour, but the recovery from anesthesia can take a few hours.

If just the adenoid is removed (not the tonsils too) your child’s throat will be mildly sore for a day or two after surgery. Most children are able to eat and drink normally within a few hours after surgery, even if their throat hurts a little. It is very important that your child drink plenty of fluids after surgery. It is common for your child to have a temporary sore throat for about 2-3 weeks after getting tonsils and adenoids removed. The pain will be most severe for the first week after surgery and will usually be gone in 2-3 weeks.
