What is Scalp Micropigmentation?

Scalp Micropigmentation also known as SMP is a popular non-surgical hair loss treatment during which natural pigments are applied within the dermal layer of the scalp, replicating a natural shaved head look, hence making it a great solution to hair loss.

Who is a candidate for Scalp Micropigmentation?

. Men and women wanting the appearance of added hair density

. People with shaved heads that desire hairline definition

. Alopecia sufferers

. Those who want to camouflage burns, scars or birthmarks

. Non-candidates for hair transplantation

. Patients, providing the bridge between hair loss and regrowth

What are the Benefits of Scalp Micropigmentation?

. SMP restores the natural hairline in the case of moderate to complete baldness

. Conceals varying forms of alopecia and diffuse thinning

. Effectively reduces the visual impact scarring, burns or blemishes can have on the scalp.

. It is an affordable treatment coming in at only the fraction of the cost of its counterparts such as hair transplants.

. Scalp micropigmentation is a safe treatment. Pigments used during treatment are full of solely natural ingredients and are often found to be plant-based.

. And to save the best until last… it is a treatment that doesn’t claim to promote hair growth, but it is one that can claim that it is guaranteed to work. This is because it conceals the problem over attempting to cure one that is notoriously difficult to reverse.

Risks and Side effects

What are the Risks and Side effects of scalp micropigmentation?

. Swollen lymph nodes

Although all scalp micropigmentation side effects are rare, this is the most common of those observed that can actually be classed as a genuine ‘side effect’. Patients occasionally report lumps at the back of their head that surface shortly after a treatment session.

. Redness

Experienced by most patients, post-treatment redness is seen immediately after treatment and usually subsides within 1-2 days.

. Itchy scalp

Some clients report that their scalp feels itchy or tight after their treatment sessions. This usually kicks in after a couple of days and goes away again as the scalp heals. This is caused by the natural healing process, as each micro-wound scabs and the skin exfoliates.

. Dots too large

Immediately after your treatment, each dot is covered by a small scab. These scabs contain pigment, and look like oversized SMP dots. After 5-10 days, the scabs start to come away and take much of the pigment with them, leaving behind a much smaller, lighter and ultimately more realistic ‘follicle’ representation.

. Rapid mid-treatment fading

Caused by exactly the same process as described above, when scabs start to come away to reveal much smaller and lighter dots beneath, this is often misinterpreted as fading. It’s not actually fading, but the change can be dramatic and leaves some clients disappointed because they believe their treatment is disappearing.

. Dots are turning blue

Poorly trained scalp micropigmentation practitioners often use regular tattoo techniques to create what they believe is SMP. Unfortunately this means that regular tattoo inks are often used, often deposited too deeply, which quickly causes pigments to break down and turn blue under the skin.

During Scalp Micropigmentation

How does Scalp Micropigmentation work?

Also known by the abbreviated version, SMP, treatment is administered by a qualified technician. It works by natural pigments being implanted underneath the outer and waterproof layer of your skin which is known as the epidermis. The pigments are implanted in a series of tiny dots using a machine that has been fitted with a microneedle. Once the implants have healed over they leave a marking that resembles hair follicles.

Scalp micropigmentation treatments are a camouflage hair loss solution for men and women.

For most treatments on men, SMP involves replicating the appearance of shaven hair, by introducing thousands of tiny pigment deposits into the epidermis of the scalp. When placed by a skilled technician, the recipient appears as if they have a full head of hair shaved to a very short length, hiding the appearance of pattern baldness or even complete baldness.

For women of various hair color, or for men who are not experiencing complete baldness and wish to keep their existing hair at a longer length, the process is applied to the scalp to reduce the contrast between the scalp skin and the remaining hair.

The patient usually requires 2-3 sessions of cosmetic pigmentation, each lasting approximately 2-3 hours, but time does vary depending on individual requirements. Those with bald heads will require longer sessions. The process is repeated until both the technician and client are satisfied that the semblance of hair cannot be distinguished from the surrounding real hair.

The end result is a look of a freshly barbered and iconic buzz-cut, or in the case of diffuse thinning, underlying shading to provide a look of density. In the case of scarring from surgery, burns or birthmarks, scalp micropigmentation can be administered to even out the linear aspect deeming the blemish near to invisible to the naked eye.

After scalp micropigmentation

What is the recovery period after scalp micropigmentation?

How does our skin heal itself?

As we know that perforations are small holes, and when we make these holes, our body tries to correct the damage. So, whenever the skin is ruptured or perforated, the immune system comes into action to heal it efficiently. The outermost layer of our skin is called epidermis, which is relatively thick and works as a protective barrier for underlying dermis (the second layer) and glands. When a perforation is made in the epidermis, our body deals with it by launching white blood cells to close off the wound and then generates a new tissue.

When perforation or injury extends from the epidermis to the dermis, bleeding occurs and inflammatory response begins. Clotting mechanism begins and the scab is formed within several hours. The scab covers the wound to prevent any microorganism from entering the skin. New cells are formed and after some days the wound is closed off by “contraction”.

Same is the case with Scalp Micropigmentation therapy. During the SMP procedure, micro-perforations are made into the skin, and the ink is injected into the area.

Recovery

The recovery time varies from patient to patient but the following would be the approximate duration of the process:

. After the first session, the immediate response you will notice would be redness. It is a natural response as the skin is a sensitive organ.

. You may also notice slight inflammation, which is again, natural. The micro-perforations made throughout the area cause inflammation, but it is nothing to worry about. Inflammation is the first stage of wound healing. A soothing cream that is suitable for this process may be applied throughout the healing time period to help the inflammation and redness.

. During the 2nd-4th days, when the redness subsides you will notice scab formation throughout the area. Scabs are protective layers. The healing process still continues under the scabs. Any caps or hats are advised during this time period to avoid any unpleasant incidents. Although it should be taken off from time to time to allow the skin to breathe.

Note: Sunlight is an important factor in healing as darkness prevents healing.

. As you near the end of the week, the scabs become dry and some start to fall off. It will be mostly during your 5th or 6th day. There might be a strong urge to pick at these scabs, but it is best to not disturb them. When the healing is done, scabs will fall off ultimately. Picking at them will not only disturb the healing process, but the pigment might come out with the scab.

. As the scabs fall off, new skin is formed and the scalp fully heals itself. This is usually by the end of the week and the client is ready for the next session.

Aftercare

. Avoid swimming, saunas, and steam rooms for 28 days after your final treatment.

. Keep out of the sun for 28 days after treatment. Thereafter, use SPF 30–50 sunscreen.

. Avoid heavy exercise for five days after your final treatment.

. Begin to regularly moisturize the treated area after the fourth day of your final treatment (this is also true between treatments).

How does the healing effect the pigments?

When the skin heals after the perforations and closes off, it encloses the pigments within itself. It goes deep in some areas and shallow in other areas. Due to which the pigments may appear lighter, darker, translucent or even invisible.  This gives the physician a good idea of the next session and how to approach it and make it the best for the client.

Does Scalp Micropigmentation hurt?

The treatment hurts less than the regular tattoo or a hair transplant since the needle does not penetrate as deeply. It is done using a digitally controlled machined with tinier needles than those used in typical tattoo procedures. Also, anesthetics can be applied, but most men can manage without.

Does it work for women?

It is a common misconception that only men suffer from thinning hair. But the truth is 5% of women also experience the same thing. Scalp micropigmentation can also be done on women. Micropigmentation makes balding areas less noticeable.

How long does scalp micropigmentation last?

SMP is a permanent solution to hair loss and with the correct maintenance and touch ups it will last a lifetime. Touch ups will depend on the client’s immune system and other various factors, the biggest being sun exposure. Some clients touch up every four to six years whereas some need it every three years. No two clients are the same.

Scalp Micropigmentation Cost

The average cost of scalp micropigmentation can vary to some degree from patient to patient depending on the nature of their case. On the whole, scalp micropigmentation will cost less than a full hair transplant since there is no surgery involved or any other invasive treatment needs.
