BBL Shrinking

How To Get the Best Results from a BBL Surgery?

Most patients lose 40% of their initial butt volume after a Brazilian Butt Lift and they are left wondering why.

A Brazilian Butt Lift is one of the most commonly sought-out cosmetic procedure as it leaves you with a beautifully sculpted body. It’s normal for patients to be excited to see the results of their BBL. But it’s important to know that after having Brazilian Butt Lift surgery done, results will go through a period of change before settling into their final state.

With time, these side effects will subside in areas with liposuction, making those areas smaller. It is normal after surgery for the buttocks to shrink slightly due to swelling and inflammation from the fat grafting. However, once the fat graft takes, which could take anywhere between three weeks and three months, you’ll notice some fluffing and the buttocks starting to look nice and round.

Why Is There Observe Volume Loss or Shrinking After BBL?

The main reason that patients see volume loss after a Brazilian Butt Lift is because most practitioners use traditional liposuction techniques to harvest fat. When they use that technique, the cannula literally rips out fat cells, almost like physical extraction. This trauma causes the nicking of the fat cell membrane. Once the membrane is nicked, the fat cells will die.

Unfortunately, practitioners can’t differentiate between the living and dead fat cells, so they take all of the harvested cells, both dead and alive, and put them into the butt. As a result, the body reabsorbs 40% of the cells. Therein lies the problem. The reason for the 40% volume loss is that the body removes the injured fat cells when they die. Clearly, the issue results from surgical technique, not pressure caused cell death.

In contrast to traditional liposuction, VASER utilizes ultrasound energy to melt the fat. Melting the fat breaks up the cluster of solid cells tethered together and releases them gently from a solid-state to a single cell, liquid state. As a result, when we remove them, we are siphoning out of fat cells rather than piercing and killing them. Fat viability has been shown to be up to 96% with the VASER technique, proving once again that the technique creates results, not just the post-operative patient care limitations.

The BBL Recovery Timeline

Swelling and discomfort will be at their peak during the first few days after surgery. It is recommended to ice the surgical areas to help soothe any swelling. Bruising will not be pretty during this time either, with the appearance of a black, blue, or dark purple hue. It’s vital during the recovery process that patients refrain from sitting down for 4 weeks to prevent losing a large portion of fat cells before they’ve had a chance to develop a sufficient blood flow.

It is normal for the swelling to persist during the first week, but it should decrease after about two weeks. Bruising should also begin to fade around day 6 and will be completely gone after a few weeks. While discomfort will start to lessen during this first week, it is normal to feel some soreness.

You will notice the swelling, discomfort, and soreness have started to go away throughout the first few months. During this time, your buttocks will go through its fluffing stage, where the booty will appear rounder and less stiff. Your doctor will give you the approval to go back to work around weeks 3-6. However, this will vary depending on your doctor and how your buttocks are recovering.

At the 6-month mark, there should be little to no swelling, discomfort, and soreness, and patients should have a good idea of what their BBL results will look like at this point. All sites that had fat extracted should be looking back to normal, and any scars resulting from the procedure will continue to heal for a year or longer.

It’s crucial to remain patient on your recovery process and remember to follow all post-op instructions given to you by your surgeon to achieve the best results possible. Trust the process, and after a few months, you will be able to appreciate your newly transformed body.

When does the buttock stop shrinking after a BBL?

Because of swelling and a lack of fat resorption, the results immediately following surgery will be the most dramatic. For the first few weeks, the buttock will continue to shrink in size. The results are permanent after about 6 weeks. About half of the fat transferred survives and becomes a part of you. As long as there is no weight fluctuation, this will remain stable. The fat will not move, but weight loss will be distributed differently. The procedure-induced fat in the buttocks will grow larger with weight gain and shrink with weight loss. I’ve seen patients a year or two later, and the photos show that the BBL results are permanent.

My butt keeps shrinking after a BBL, what can I do to avoid further shrinking?

There are two stages of shrinking of the buttocks right after the fat grafting to the buttocks. Right after surgery not only has the fat been added, but there’s a great deal of soft tissue swelling. Much of this soft tissue swelling will resolve in about 3 to 6 weeks, that’s only the beginning. The second phase of shrinkage occurs as the body decides how much of the fat that has been injected will take on a new blood supply be maintained. Fat that does not take on blood supply from the surrounding tissues will ultimately be absorbed by your body, and this can take 6 to 12 months. Do not be discouraged yet, what you’re going through is a part of the normal healing process. Areas where the fat has been removed will also be shrinking as well and this can help to accentuated the areas where the fat has been placed. Because a certain percentage of the fat is reabsorbed after surgery most surgeons will overcorrect from the get go. If, after a year, you feel that you need more enhancement, additional fat grafting can likely be performed.
