Kish Island is one of the most popular destinations among tourists taking tour to Iran. This island owns many fantastic attractions, one of the most magnificent features of this island is its massive subterranean city covering an area of 10,000 square metres, constructed from its ancient underground aqueduct (or ‘kariz’).

Kish Island is one of the most popular destinations among tourists taking tour to Iran. This island owns many fantastic attractions, one of the most magnificent features of this island is its massive subterranean city covering an area of 10,000 square metres, constructed from its ancient underground aqueduct (or ‘kariz’). The kariz of Kish is said to have been built about 2500 years ago by the inhabitants of Harireh city. This structure was built to collect, purify, and store water for the inhabitants of the island. As the island is situated in a region with an arid climate, this was essential for their survival. It must be said that the earth excavated from Kariz has much medicinal value and will have abundant use in “mud treatment.

Kariz Underground City includes three aqueducts and 274 wells which are an amusement place and allows people to visit the ancient aqueducts in the beautiful island of Kish. Some of these wells are totally intact and some others have been turned into a conoid form for better ventilation of light and air.
