Is Endoscopic Septoplasty Better?

Septoplasty (SEP-toe-plas-tee) is a surgical procedure to straighten the bone and cartilage dividing the space between your two nostrils (septum). When the septum is crooked, it’s known as a deviated septum. A deviated septum can make it harder to breathe through your nose and can increase the risk of sinus infections due to poor drainage.

During septoplasty, your nasal septum is repositioned to the middle of your nose. This may require your surgeon to cut and remove parts of your nasal septum before reinserting them in the proper position.

Once a septoplasty is healed, you’ll likely find it’s easier to breathe. Your surgeon can discuss what septoplasty can achieve for you.

What is Endoscopic Septoplasty?

If you’ve been diagnosed with a deviated septum, you will be presented with treatment options by your ENT. These options can range from short-term sprays to battle off congestion to long-term solutions, including surgery.

A deviated septum can be corrected through septoplasty. Performed with an endoscope, endoscopic septoplasty is a surgical procedure that involves the straightening or repositioning of the septum by a surgeon. The endoscope is placed in the nose to view the area and make the proper incision and adjustments. The procedure centers the septum to allow air to flow evenly through the nostrils.

Endoscopic septoplasty is traditionally an outpatient procedure lasting 1-2 hours. Septoplasty can be performed under either local or general anesthesia and full recovery may take several weeks.  With your septum centered, you can breathe evenly and avoid the sinus infections, congestion, and other issues caused by your deviated septum.

Is Endoscopic Septoplasty Better than the conventional Septoplasty?

Nasal obstruction due to deviated nasal septum is a common problem encountered by otolaryngologists. A variety of surgical procedures have been tried in the treatment of the same. A study published in 2013, analyzed fifty patients with symptomatic deviated nasal septum, 25 of them underwent conventional septoplasty and the rest underwent endoscopic septoplasty. the study found that the difference in the functional outcome of both the surgeries was insignificant. There was a significant difference with respect to complications. Endoscopic septoplasty had better outcome with respect to complications. It is easier to correct posterior deviations and isolated spurs with endoscopic septoplasty and there are less complications with endoscopic septoplasty.

What are the benefits of Endoscopic Septoplasty?

The Endoscopic approach to septoplasty provides several benefits over the standard head light technique-

. Adequate visualization

. More space for inserting instruments during a FESS

. Access to Paranasal sinuses and for other surgeries such as transseptal approach

. Stopping of nasal bleeding after the surgery

. Minimal lifting of the flap
