If your teeth are stained, discolored, worn, chipped, broken, misaligned, misshapen, or have gaps between them, modern cosmetic dentistry can give you a better smile. In fact, cosmetic dentistry is the art and science of dentistry applied to enhance the smile of an individual, it’s also about the general appearance and wellbeing of your teeth and gums, with the point being an expanded feeling of prosperity and better mental self-view.

Although the main focus is on aesthetics, many cosmetic procedures also serve to improve the functionality of the teeth and overall oral health, and in this regard there is some overlap with restorative dentistry. However, some non-reversible procedures cause lasting damage to tooth enamel. It’s therefore important to discuss your chosen procedure with your dentist and understand exactly what it involves.

A skilled, experienced cosmetic dentist in Iran can help to improve your appearance, your smile, even your self-esteem and confidence. Today, cosmetic dentistry in Iran has continued to evolve to where cosmetic dentists can address functional and aesthetic patient concerns.

Types of cosmetic dentistry

Here are some of the most common aesthetic dental treatments carried out in Iran:

. Teeth whitening

Whitening, or “tooth bleaching”, is the most common cosmetic dental procedure. Teeth whitening is the most popular, least expensive and most straightforward of all the cosmetic dentistry procedures. As the name implies, teeth whitening techniques correct the discoloration in teeth. In the teeth whitening procedure, teeth are thoroughly cleaned to eliminate plaque, tartar and food debris from the tooth’s crevices. Depending on the quantity of discoloration, cosmetic dentists also use bleaching agents for teeth whitening.

Whitening is a safe, fast and easy process that is effective for almost everyone.  While many whitening options are now available, including over the counter products, dentist-supervised treatments remain the recommended procedures for lightening discolored teeth.

Laser whitening is a teeth whitening technique in which gums are covered with rubber and a bleaching chemical is applied on the teeth. A beam of argon laser, which is intended to accelerate the process of bleaching, is then projected upon the teeth. This laser activates the bleaching chemical and lightens the teeth color. Laser whitening is said to be six times more effective in teeth whitening compared to other procedures.

. Reshaping

Tooth reshaping removes parts of the enamel to improve the appearance of the tooth. It may be used to correct a small chip, or to alter the length, shape or position of teeth, as well as when there is tooth size discrepancy; it can be used to correct crooked or excessively long teeth. The removed enamel is irreplaceable, and may sometimes expose dentin. It is also known as enameloplasty, odontoplasty, contouring, recontouring, slenderizing, and stripping. This procedure offers fast results and can even be a substitute for braces under certain circumstances.

. Braces

If you want to get straighter teeth you’ll most likely need braces of some sort. These devices exert pressure on certain teeth to move them into the desired position. Children and teenagers are often treated with metal braces, but there are many other types of brace available if you get private treatment.

Patients who don’t want it to be so obvious that they are wearing braces could consider:

. “Invisible” braces: These clear plastic aligners sit over teeth like a mouth guard and are only noticeable very close up.

. Lingual braces: Similar in design to traditional metal braces, these are attached to the back of teeth, hidden inside the mouth.

. Clear or tooth-colored ceramic braces: These work in the same way as metal braces but are designed to blend in with natural tooth color.

Treatment with braces can take anywhere from six months to two years or more, depending on the degree of movement required.

Many adults get braces later in life because they are unhappy with the appearance of their teeth. However, straighter teeth are actually easier to clean properly so getting braces can improve your oral hygiene, too.

. Dental crowns

A dental crown is a cap-like structure placed over a damaged tooth. Dental crowns cover teeth that are decayed, damaged, severely discolored, misshapen, cracked or chipped. They restore the size, shape, strength and appearance of the teeth. Dental crowns are made of dental porcelain, ceramic, composite or porcelain fused to metal. With appropriate care, they tend to last for approximately 30 years.

. Bonding

Bonding is a process in which an enamel-like dental composite material is applied to a tooth’s surface, sculpted into shape, hardened and then polished. An example of a bonding substance are inlays and onlays, which are used to repair decayed & cracked teeth. These are helped at those parts of teeth when a filling is too small to correct the decayed teeth and a crown would be excessive. Bonding usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes.

. Dental bridges

Dental bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth. Teeth on both sides of the space left by the missing teeth are prepared. A bridge is made up of abutments, the teeth that are prepped, and the missing, false teeth, which are called pontics. This procedure is used to replace one or more missing teeth and is cemented in. Bridges can consist of more than three teeth in total and the viability of any bridge is usually determined by applying Ante’s Law and assessing where in the mouth the teeth are. Most bridges are fixed, they cannot be removed. Fixed bridges cannot be taken out in the same way that partial dentures can. In areas of the mouth that are under less stress, such as the front teeth, a cantilever bridge may be used. Cantilever bridges or Maryland Bridges are used to replace anterior or front missing teeth, are minimally invasive but do have a reputation for failure. Bridges require commitment to serious oral hygiene and carry risk. The average life of bridges is nearly ten years.

. Veneers

Veneers are ultra-thin, custom-made porcelain laminates that are bonded directly to the teeth and cover the front teeth. After removing about a half-millimeter of enamel from the tooth surface, these thin shells are bonded (cemented) to the front of the teeth. They are an option for closing gaps, enhance the shape, or change the color of teeth that do not respond well to whitening procedures. That is, these ultra-thin shells cover the visible flaws associated with size, color, shape or length of the teeth. The thin veneer is fixed to the tooth with the assistance of cementing material. Dental veneers last for an estimated 20 years without staining, and they blend seamlessly with the other teeth.

. Dental Implants

Dental implants are used to substitute missing teeth. They are made of metallic objects like titanium and their placement is usually carried out through surgery. In most cases, they provide permanent solutions, unlike other restorative options like dental bridges. They are conceived to serve as a tooth root with the ability to hold artificial teeth like dentures, bridges and crowns.

. Gum lifts

A gum lift is a cosmetic dental procedure that raises and sculpts the gum line. The procedure involves reshaping the tissue and/or underlying bones to create the appearance of longer or more symmetrical teeth, thereby making the smile more aesthetically pleasing.

. Bite reclamation

Bite reclamation is for patients who have had years of excessive wear to their teeth due to grinding or acid reflux can alter their vertical dimension. This gives them a closed or shorter look to their face and smile. By opening up their bite, a qualified professional can reclaim their vertical dimension.

Bite reclamation is a type of cosmetic dental surgery with which, the vertical dimensions of the teeth can be reclaimed and restored to the natural levels, thereby improving the appearance of the face and smile and at times, causing even the unwanted wrinkles to disappear.
